One person died and three others were hurt when two small planes crashed into each other
in the air while trying to land at a Colorado airport on Sunday morning.
The two planes—a Cessna 172 and an Extra EA-300, each with two people on board—hit each other
as both pilots tried to land on the runway at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport at the same time,
the Federal Aviation Administration said.One person in the Extra EA-300 passed away
at the crash site, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
The other person on that plane was taken to a local hospital . Their current condition is not yet known.The two people on the Cessna 172 received treatment at the crash site for minor injuries.One plane went up in flames after the frightening crash, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, though they didn’t say which one.
Both aircraft were completely wrecked. One was burned down to ash and debris, while the other was left with only its tail, one wing, and a single tire among the ruins.
During the panic, people nearby hurried to the fire to help as heavy smoke poured from the wreckage, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reported. Some even tried to stop the blaze themselves.
“We share our deepest sympathies with the family and friends of the person lost in this awful tragedy. We also want to thank the brave locals who worked to put out the fire until firefighters and first responders reached the scene,” the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office stated.
